Course Description

Jean Monnet Module

The course examines the European Union’s ‘Sustainability Trilemma’ through the lens of the inextricable link between internal and external security. It analyses how the EU’s Member States can address and reconcile this Trilemma with their political choice to increase defence spending, and the objectives of the green transition and the fiscal requirements of the welfare state. Drawing on the Draghi Report and other EU documents, it delves into core analytical categories of governance, such as the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), Strategic Autonomy, the ‘Readiness 2030’ plan, Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), the European Defence Fund (EDF) and the European Defence Agency (EDA), to explore the dynamics unfolding in the security and society complex within the EU
