Call for Applications
The Department of Political Science and International Relations (PSIR) is pleased to announce and invite applications for its first Youth Summer School at its new premises in the seaside town of Kiato. This year, Youth Summer School 2014’s focal theme is entitled “Youth and Development in the Mediterranean.” It is designed to encourage and bring together scholars and students who display an interest or seek to develop a commitment to the study of the multifaceted relationship of youth to development in the Mediterranean. It particularly targets pre-early career university students of any level who are strongly interested in deepening or gaining knowledge of the subject field and, thereby, acquiring a useful educational building block for further research or future employment.
In particular, the 2014 PSIR Youth Summer School sets out to focus on the following topics:
- Youth as Agent of Change: Political Movements, Social Media and NGOs,
- The Role of Political and Social Islam: Different Trends and Discourses,
- Youth in War Zones and Failed States (Syria, Libya, Iraq),
- Youth and Migration Pressures,
- Regional Co-operation on Development and Education.
From this angle, the School aims to:
- discuss theoretical approaches to the role of youth in world politics,
- identify and explain political, economic and cultural developments in the Mediterranean,
- outline the fundamentals and features of development,
- examine and evaluate current debates relating to development in the Mediterranean,
- analyze the contribution of youth to advancing development in the Mediterranean and,
- relate theory to real-world practice in the Mediterranean.
Among other speakers and tutors, the 2014 PSIR Youth Summer School’s Faculty includes:
- Arshin Adib-Moghaddam, Reader, SOAS, University of London & Chair, Centre for Iranian Studies at London Middle East Institute
- Ivan Martin, Senior Research Fellow, CIDOB (Barcelona Centre for International Affairs)
- Florian Hartleb, Research Fellow, Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies
- Sotiris Roussos, Associate Professor, PSIR, University of the Peloponnese
Venue Information
The Summer School will take place in the seaside city of Kiato (see Wikipedia). Kiato has an hourly, direct suburban railway connection to the Athens International Airport (approx. 95 minutes) and is situated west of Athens at the northern part of Peloponnisos (see Wikipedia). You may find out the Airport-to-Kiato timetable here.
Particularly active during the summer season, Kiato is a popular seaside destination, all year round. Long and sandy beaches by transparent blue seas, vivid nightlife, rich sight-seeing nearby, make Kiato an ideal place to host the 2014 PSIR Youth Summer School and thus blend academic and social activities.
