Short biographical note

Dr. Marika Karagianni is a legal and international relations expert, specialized on international energy issues.

Since 2018, she is a visiting lecturer and an external research associate at the Department of Economic Studies- University of Thessaly and a visiting research fellow at the University of Peloponnese- PEDIS on international energy issues. She has lectured at the Department of Black Sea Studies- Democritus University of Thrace (2010), at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (Baku, 2017) and at the MSc on Oil & Gas of the International University (Kavala, 2019).  Also a research associate at IENE (Institute of Energy of South Eastern Europe) and a member of the Hellenic Society of International Law and International Relations.

Author of two books: “Does Energy Cause Ethnic War? Eastern Mediterranean and Caspian Sea Natural Gas and Regional Conflicts”, Andreas Stergiou- Marika Karagianni (Cambridge Publishing Scholars, London, October 2019) and “Hydrocarbons. The international contracts of offshore development” (Nomiki Vivliothiki, Athens, December 2018).

Lawyer (Athens Bar, 1998- 2006). She has served at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic (Inner Cabinet of the Minister and special advisor to the Deputy Minister on energy diplomacy and bilateral energy relations of Greece with Russia/ CIS, 2000- 2006). Advisor to the Minister of Public Order, (2006-2007). Also, MFA Coordinator of the Hellenic Chairmanship at the BSEC (2004- 2005), member of the negotiation team of Greece for Burgas- Alexandroupolis, TAP and South Stream pipelines and energy expert of the BSEC (International Center for Black Sea Studies, 2000- 2004). Also, Adjunct Fellow at the Woodraw Wilson Center (Washington, 2004-2005). As of 2006, she is a permanent expert at the Ministry of Interior and Public Order of the Hellenic Republic.

PhD on “The institutional aspects of off-shore hydrocarbons development in the Caspian Sea” Democritus University of Thrace. Award Robert Schumann (European Parliament,1999), Scholarship of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation for special training on Caspian energy issues (Moscow, 2002), Baku Summer Energy School- Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (Baku, 2011), NATO SCHOOL OBERAMMERGAU, Petroleum course (2014) and Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Energy Program (2014).
