a Jean Monnet Module course
Migration, a highly topical phenomenon in today's world, is frequently the subject of numerous discourses, whether these concern religious tolerance, equality before the law, human rights and civil society, or the economic and political implications of population movements.
The course focuses on two main areas: on the one hand, migration and its social and cultural implications, and, on the other, diasporas and their significance in contemporary social and political life in an era of globalisation.
Concerning migration, the course addresses topics such as the dimensions and dynamics of international migration; the gender dimension of migration; migration and globalisation; brain drain in contemporary Greece; EU integration policies in practice, with particular emphasis on the role of funding instruments; the role of NGOs in promoting the integration and inclusion of migrant communities and tolerance as a fundamental European value. Special attention is also given to specific themes, including the experience of living "between two cultures"; media, the role of NGOs in the integration of migrant communities, social networks and migration, with a focus on issues of representation; migration in cinema; and integration and inclusion through the arts, creative writing and storytelling.΄
Concerning diasporas, the course explores different types of diasporas (victim, trade, labour and cultural diasporas), theoretical approaches to the diasporic phenomenon, the relationship between diaspora and nation, and the formation of ethnic and cultural identities.
