Strategic Studies is the subfield of the discipline of International Relations that, focusing on human action and power, explores how means are married to ends of policy to shape events, trends and transformations in world politics. It is an interdisciplinary subfield that intersects with security and defence studies, geopolitics, crisis management, conflict resolution and foreign policy analysis. In addition, as a subfield of international relations, it engages in dialogue with the disciplines of History, Political Science and Sociology. From this perspective, drawing attention to violence, especially its primary instrument, military force, it sets the thread of the problematique and theoretical discussions over the phenomenon of war and peace. Equipped with this framework of analysis, the course sheds light on the history of strategic thought, with a view to making the conceptual and theoretical fundamentals of Strategic Studies familiar to students.
