The course “Politics and Governance of the Eurozone” focuses on the study of the governance system of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), the most advanced form of economic integration within the European Union. The objective of the course is to provide an in-depth understanding of the political dimensions of economic and monetary integration. The course examines the reasons for the creation of the Eurozone, its historical development, its institutional architecture, its functioning, the successive crises it has faced since 2010, and the contemporary challenges it faces. The course examines the official institutional organization of the Eurozone (European Central Bank, Stability and Growth Pact, Recovery and Resilience Facility, Eurogroup, European Semester), the informal structures of hierarchy and hegemony within its governance system, the influence of national interests and economic policy paradigms on decision-making, the constraints that the functioning of the Eurozone imposes on national economic policies and their impact on national political systems. At the same time, the course examines broader issues in political economy, such as the boundaries between politics and technocracy in economic decision-making, the relationship between states and financial markets, and the impact of monetary policy on economic inequalities, the green transition, and geopolitical competition, with a focus on the Eurozone.
