The purpose of this course is to analyze revolutionary movements, uprisings, and forms of political violence in the Middle East and North Africa from the late 19th century to the present. The course examines the social, political, economic, and ideological conditions that led to the emergence of resistance movements, religious apocalyptic uprisings, and armed Islamist organizations.
Particular emphasis is placed on the comparative study of cases such as the Mahdi movement in Sudan, the anti-colonial uprisings in the Middle East, the Iranian Revolution, the Islamist movements of the late 20th century, and the rise of organizations such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS.
At the same time, the course examines the role of colonialism, state formation, international interventions, religion, and social transformations in shaping revolutionary movements and forms of rebellion in the region.
